What is Improv Theatre?

With improv, it’s a combination of listening and not trying to be funny.”

– Kristen Wiig

Philosophy

Improv Theatre is the art of performing theatre without a script and trusting your fellow actors to create stories, characters, and plots on the fly. There are three philosophies guiding the actors: Yes, and; Making Statements; Making Mistakes. Actors make offers to one another which can be what they said, a character or object they mimed. Once an offer is given the other actor(s) say Yes and offer something back, always accepting new offers. This develops the setting, characters, and story. Actors are going to make mistakes and because actors are always accepting what happens on stage that is what drives the comedy!

“There are no mistakes. Only opportunities.”

— Tina Fey

Our approach

At Peach Gravy Theatre Cooperative our goal is telling stories that will make you laugh, smile, and maybe sometimes cry. We do our best to engage and welcome audience participation in our shows to help create the stories. Our platform is telling stories in short-form games that are quick, exciting, and full of energy and long-form games that go deeper into character and story development. We love to experiment! Our signature shows Passion Fruits and At the Table were developed in house. We are always experimenting to create original improv theatre!
